Half-Life: Dark Matter is coming to Steam in 2024 as a fan-made mod that tells the story of Black Ops assassins.
Legendary game series Half-Lifeis back in the spotlight with a fan-made expansion, Dark Matter. The project, which was first announced in 2022, invites fans of the series to the dark world of Black Mesa from the perspective of Black Ops assassins. The project, which was suspended for a while due to health problems, started to be developed again at the end of 2023. Dark Matter will be released in three phases and aims to deliver an experience that rivals the series’ official expansions.
Half-Life: Dark Matter’s Story and Innovations
Dark Matter tells the story of Korvac, one of the Black Ops assassins. Trying to survive in a sewer after being tortured by HECU soldiers, Korvac drags the players into a challenging adventure.
The mod focuses on Black Ops units from the Half-Life universe. These units are known as a secret government team equipped with black equipment and stealth technologies, which appeared in the 1998 game. Dark Matter gives players the chance to explore the dark missions of this special team.
New features include a Metal Gear Solid-inspired thermal vision mode and innovative gameplay mechanics such as document collection. Additionally, Black Ops units stand out with a new fire axe, assassin zombies and updated visuals.
The first phase of Dark Matter will consist of a prologue called “Drop Zone” and a total of five episodes. The mode will be released for free on Steam and will be completed in three separate phases. Although the release date is not yet finalized, the developer team states that the game will arrive earlier than expected.
