Assoc. Prof. came to Edirne for a symposium hosted by Trakya University. Dr. Ocak stated that various treatments are applied to patients with hearing loss.
Stating that hearing loss can occur due to different reasons, Ocak said, “The most common discomfort we see regarding hearing loss is a neural hearing loss due to the inner ear. We treat this with hearing aids, popularly known as headphones, up to a certain point. However, sometimes the hearing loss progresses to such an extent.” “The person can no longer hear with normal hearing aids and the devices do not work.” he said.
Ocak stated that cochlear implants are applied to patients in cases of hearing loss where the ability to hear disappears.
“THIS IS REALLY A GREAT TECHNOLOGY”
Explaining that the cochlear implant is popularly called “bionic ear”, Ocak said:
“This is a device consisting of two parts. We surgically place the inner part in the inner part of the patient’s ear, which we call the cochlea. Then, a few weeks after the procedure is completed, we place the outer part in audiology clinics, and after the inner and outer parts integrate with each other, the patient begins to hear. This is truly amazing.” “Man has five senses. I can say that it is the only technology that can replace a lost sense artificially.”
Ocak stated that in rare cases where the cochlear implant does not help, a brainstem implant is placed in the center of hearing in the brain.
Ocak also advised those with hearing loss to consult a specialist doctor without delay and said, “Almost every hearing loss has a solution and treatment. As long as we do not delay. Early diagnosis and treatment will greatly improve your quality of life.” he said.
