Lindsey Vonn, 40, recently made a comeback as an alpine skier.
Now Pernilla Wiberg, 54, says that she has also thought along those lines.
– Why not?, she says in SVT’s Vinterstudion.
The American Lindsey Vonn ended his career as an alpine skier back in 2019 due to injuries. By then she had already managed to collect 82 World Cup victories, four less than that Ingemar Stenmarks legendary 86 victories. Almost six years later, Vonn has now made an unlikely comeback. On Sunday she was back on the slopes and came 14th in the super-G in St Moritz.
Pernilla Wiberg’s words about Lindsey Vonn
After Lindsey Vonn’s incredibly impressive comeback in elite sports, she received a lot of praise from the SVT expert, also a former Swedish alpine skier, Pernilla Wiberg.
– I said before that if she is in the top 20, that is fantastic. She has her best chances to reach top positions in downhill. It was really good of her and you could see that she drove at 75 percent today, says Wiberg in SVT.

In the same broadcast, when she sits with a group of experts in SVT’s Winter Studio, she talks to the presenter Yvette Hermundstad that she herself would have liked to make a comeback during her career. Right now she is 54 years old, a full 14 years older than Vonn, so our popular alpine star understands that it is not so relevant at the moment. But she is still attracted by the idea of competing again.
– But like this… If I hadn’t had a knee that hurts as much as it does, I might have been able to do it. Now I am very much older than what Lindsey Vonn is. We must remember that, she says.
Pernilla Wiberg’s honest words about a comeback
Yvette is very surprised when Pernilla starts to hint that she must have thought about starting to compete at the elite level again.
– So you could imagine making a comeback?, she asks in surprise.
– Now that you see that there are so many people who do it… When I quit in 2002, there was no one who did it, but now it has become a bit more modern and on the news. So why not? If I had been completely pain free. Which I think is one of the reasons why Lindsey Vonn thinks it’s so much fun, you can see the joy, because the last years she rode she was in a lot of pain and now she doesn’t have it, replies Wiberg.

SVT’s hockey expert Jonas Andersson then points out, admittedly jokingly, that in such cases Pernilla must start the handlebar exercises again, especially leg bends. Something that makes everyone in the studio laugh a little. Pernilla then informs that these days the skis are built in a slightly different way, so the skiers don’t really have to put as much effort into turning. It’s more a matter of technique.
It would be absolutely incredible if 54-year-old Pernilla Wiberg were to make a new elite venture. Lindsey Vonn who is 40 recently did it. Do you think that “The Pill” could also succeed? Feel free to comment on Sportbibeln’s Facebook page.
