This year, Netflix went online with Sailor Moon Cosmos, the conclusion of the Sailor Moon reboot that began with Sailor Moon Crystal. But hardcore fans swear by them classic 90s version of the animewhich was produced alongside the original manga by Naoko Takeuchi at the time.
The original series was also back then three anime films for seasons 2 to 4 (R, S and SuperS), which are being shown on television today as part of a big Sailor Moon marathon. One of these in particular is perfect for the Christmas season!
Sailor Moon R: Dangerous Flowers
In Sailor Moon: Dangerous Flowers, a mysterious man from Mamoru’s past appears who introduces himself as Fiore and talks about a promise he once made to Bunny’s friend. Sailor Moon and the other sailor warriors soon have to deal with the floral monster henchmen of the jealous alien villain, who quickly kidnaps Mamoru to a comet near Earth. The Sailor Warriors give chase and soon have to save not only Mamoru, but the entire world from a disastrous demise.
Fun fact: Director Kunihiko Ikuhara then oversaw the third season of Sailor Moon and later created his own magical girl anime with lesbian heroines based on Sailor Uranus and Neptune – Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Sailor Moon S: Snow Princess Kaguya
In Sailor Moon: Snow Princess Kaguya, an ice-cold villain wants to add Earth to her frosty collection of planets, but loses a fragment of her magical comet. This is picked up by the astronomer Kakeru, who saves the life of Bunny’s cat Luna, who becomes increasingly weaker due to the influence of the crystal. While the Sailor Warriors take on the Snow Villain’s cold underlings (and Tuxedo Mask makes a memorable appearance as Santa Claus), Luna tries to save the man she has fallen in love with – and experiences a Christmas miracle thanks to the magic of the Silver Crystal.
Fun fact: The film’s villain was named after one of the oldest Japanese tales. It’s about a princess from the moon who grows up on Earth and is ensnared by several men before she returns to her homeland. Studio Ghibli director Isao Takahata adapted the story as the anime The Legend of Princess Kaguya.
Sailor Moon SuperS: Journey to the land of dreams
In Sailor Moon: Journey to the Land of Dreams, Bunny’s future daughter Chibi-usa is transported to a mysterious ship with other children via music – Pied Piper of Hamelin style. The flying vehicle is supposed to take them to the kingdom of Queen Badiane, who, like the Matrix, locks children in dream coffins in which they only live in a dream world. It is only with difficulty that the Sailor Warriors and Tuxedo Mask are able to take on Badiane’s candy villains. They receive support from an elf-like boy named Peruru, with whom Chibi-usa had previously befriended.
Fun fact: The film was shown in Japanese cinemas together with an approximately 15-minute special, the title of which is translated Sailor Moon SuperS Addition: Ami’s first love is. It is a solo adventure for Sailor Merkur and was never shown in Germany.
