Two pilots from the US Navy were shot down in the Red Sea on Sunday, according to the US military, writes the AP news agency.
The incident was “friendly fire”, i.e. that one accidentally fired on one’s own forces.
The US has been present in Yemen to target Yemen’s Houthi rebels, and the AP writes that this is the most serious incident in over a year.
Both pilots survived, and one of them has minor injuries.

Putin meets Slovakia’s Fico in Moscow
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in Moscow where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, according to Russian media. Television images show the two leaders meeting in the Kremlin.
Fico is one of the few European leaders who still has a friendly attitude towards Putin, after the war of aggression in Ukraine.
The Slovak government is often described as pro-Russian and populist, and the country’s president Peter Pellegrini has stated in December that Ukraine must count on losing parts of its territory in order for peace to be achieved.

A Swedish priest in the Catholic Church was suspended from his job in November, reports say SVT News West.
The background is that in 2021 the priest was reassigned and forbidden to work with children and young people, because he allegedly had a relationship with a man who was a teenager when the relationship began.
Now he has been suspended by so-called “canonical suspension” by Cardinal Anders Arborelius.
– The guidelines given have not been respected and this has caused the cup to overflow, says Björn Håkonsson, child protection representative in the Catholic Church, to SVT.
The priest sees it as if he was fired without warning – and has now sued the Catholic Church in the Stockholm District Court.
He has also appealed the cardinal’s decision to the Dicastery for Clergy in Rome, which reports directly to the Pope, according to SVT.

Thousands demonstrate after deadly roof collapse
Thousands of people have again gathered to demonstrate in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, to demand that leaders take responsibility for the collapse of the roof of a train station in November.
15 people lost their lives in connection with the incident.
For more than seven weeks, nationwide demonstrations have been held following the collapse, which took place in the northern city of Novi Sad. Many protesters have accused authorities of insufficient oversight and corruption.
Sunday’s protest, organized by university students, began with 15 minutes of silence, one minute for each victim.
After the incident, Goran Vesic, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, resigned. The protesters also want to see Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and Novi Sad Mayor Milan Duric resign and that those directly responsible for the collapse be prosecuted.

Thirteen-time Emmy winner Burnett has no previous experience in diplomacy, but he did produce Trump’s own TV show “The Apprentice”.
“With a distinguished career in television production and business, Mark brings a unique combination of diplomatic acuity and international notoriety to this important role,” Trump wrote on his microblog Truth Social.

A small plane with ten people on board has crashed in the tourist town of Gramado in southern Brazil, reports say Reuters
“Unfortunately, the first reports indicate that no one on board has survived,” writes local governor Edurado Leite on X.
The plane crashed in an area with several shops.
According to authorities in Rio Grande do Sul, the plane first hit a chimney, then the second floor of a residence, before crashing into a furniture store.
15 people on the ground have been taken to hospital, most of them for inhaling smoke from the fire that started when the plane crashed.

Details: Eleven hostages can be released
Hamas has agreed to release 11 young men hostage in the first part of a possible ceasefire agreement, according to media reports.
In exchange, Hamas will receive a “special value”, writes the newspaper Haaretz and refers to information in the Egyptian television channel Al-Ghad. The details of what it might be about are still unknown.
An Israeli official tells The Times of Israel that Hamas has provided evidence that several hostages are alive. Israel is said to know where most of the hostages are, but the newspaper’s source does not want to say whether Hamas has provided a list of which hostages are still alive.

Raped a young woman – the punishment is toughened
The Court of Appeal toughens the sentence for an 18-year-old man who was convicted of, among other things, rape and serious assault against a young woman in Motala, reports P4 Östergötland.
The penalty is increased from four years to eight years in prison since the Court of Appeal has determined that it is serious rape. The amount of damages is also increased to just over SEK 600,000.
A 14-year-old boy is also judged to be guilty of the crimes, but due to his age he cannot be punished. However, he must pay close to SEK 350,000 of the damages to the victim in solidarity with the 18-year-old.
The abuse happened last summer. The young woman was also burned with cigarettes and cut with a knife.
