A 250 square meter flat in Helsinki that housed the state news agency Tass. It is the latest seizure of Russian properties by Finnish authorities.
The floor, with seven rooms, is located near the headquarters of the Finnish Security Police and has long been in Russian ownership. In addition to the Tass news agency, Russian embassy staff have previously used it. Last fall, according to the ad, the “fleet” floor was available for rent for 4,400 euros a month, corresponding to roughly 50,000 Swedish kronor.
In total, Finland has now seized Russian properties worth nearly 40 million euros, corresponding to approximately 459 million Swedish kronor, reports EPN. Among the properties that have been seized in the past is an area on Åland, called “Putin’s beach plot”.
Behind the seizures is a judgment of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in April 2023. The court then ordered Russia to pay the Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz five billion euros in compensation for damages caused by the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. The Helsinki district court has decided that Russian property worth around four billion euros will be seized.
Russia has protested against the confiscations in Finland.
