Martin Melin won the Robinson in 1997

When the Robinson era began at the end of the 1990s, the winnings were certainly the same, but half a million kroner was something completely different from what it is today. The winning amount that Melin received simply had a different value then.
In one press release explains Länsförsäkringar’s private economist, Stefan Westerbergbecause the prize money has lost a full 40 percent in both value and purchasing power in the past 27 years.
– SEK 500,000 is not what it once was. Today you can hardly get an apartment for that amount. And to top it all off, you have to live like a “Robinson” and live on rice and palm hearts for just over 40 days. But on the other hand, it may not be the money that attracts Robinson. It’s probably more the chance to become a survival hero in prime time, he says.

The prize money in Robinson worth less in 2024
According to Westerberg, Martin Melin’s prize money in 1997 was a whopping 28 times as much as an average salary during the same year. When Ida Jensen Krogstads receives the prize money from TV4 this year, it corresponds to only 12.5 times the average salary in Sweden.
Half a million kroner was simply worth more then than now and you got more for your money in society.
In 1997, according to Länsförsäkringar’s calculation, you could buy a home of 85 square meters for half a million. In 2024, you get just eleven square meters for the same amount.
SEK 500,000 was a breathtaking sum then, but is not worth as much today. Adjusted for inflation, Jensen Krogstad’s prize money would be worth a whopping SEK 806,000 today.
