Star Wars actress comments on sci-fi flop with Tom Holland that cost €95 million

Three years after one of her biggest flops, Daisy Ridley, who most people probably know from the Star Wars sequels, talks about what went wrong during the filming of the film.

What film is it about? The film is called Chaos Walking and is from 2021. The story takes place in a dystopia of the future in which there are no more women. In addition, all living beings have the ability to listen to the thoughts of others.

In addition to Daisy Ridley, stars like Tom Holland and Mads Mikkelsen also star in Chaos Walking. The director Doug Liman is also anything but an unknown. He directed films like The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, which may get a sequel.

Unfortunately, Chaos Walking turned out to be a colossal flop. With a budget of around €95 million, it only grossed €27 million worldwide. Since a film in Hollywood has to gross twice its budget to be considered a success, Chaos Walking missed this requirement by a wide margin.

Daisy Ridley commented on the film and shared her experiences from the set.

A shoot full of difficulties

What does the actress say? Three years after the film was released, Daisy Ridley remembers the filming, which was accompanied by some difficulties. Director Doug Liman brought his own unusual working methods to the set.

In an interview with Empire (via screenrant.com), Ridley describes working on one particular scene:

Doug [Liman] works differently than most people I’ve worked with. Very spontaneous. But in that scene I remember the sheer fear of playing someone who can’t swim and going out into a pretty fast-moving river. I can swim, but when you play someone who can’t swim, you panic.

The scene turned into an unpleasant experience for the actress. She herself says that she loved the idea of the film.

The corona pandemic also caused further difficulties, which caused delays in the release date. The film was pushed further and further back because many cinemas were simply closed.

The film was released in 2021 – but not in cinemas in Germany, but directly on DVD or in a stream. Daisy Ridley doesn’t seem to look back too much, though. Ultimately, it was a job that she did diligently. After filming ended, she walked off the set and watched the film become a financial flop. “What should you do?” is what she says about it today.

Despite having a well-known cast, Chaos Walking wasn’t a success. This shows that a star ensemble isn’t everything. But you have to admit that the film didn’t come out at an ideal time. Chaos Walking will probably not play a major role in Daisy Ridley’s filmography in the future.
