Unsettled weather and fluctuating temperatures have caused SMHI to issue numerous warnings.
In the south, rain and slips are expected, while the northern parts of the country may get snow and strong winds.
– It can be noisy in traffic. If you’re going out on the roads, check SMHI, says TV4’s meteorologist Linda Eriksson.
Today, the country is covered by several yellow weather warnings and up in the north, even a couple of orange ones.
– Today we have a precipitation area that moves north and east. SMHI has issued several warnings with rain in the south, snowfall in the north and windy weather, says Linda Eriksson, TV4’s meteorologist.
Some of the warnings concern heavy snowfall and strong winds, which in some places can blow up to a storm.
– In northwestern Svealand and large parts of Norrland there is a warning of snowfall. In some places, there may be up to 20 centimeters of snow. There may be drifts of snow, poor visibility and slippery conditions. It will be really windy in the Lapland mountains during the afternoon and from the evening it can locally blow up to a storm.
Icy on the roads
The weather can create problems in traffic, and Linda Eriksson urges anyone who is going to get behind the wheel to take a look at the weather warnings first.
– In parts of northern Götaland, Svealand and southern Norrland there is a warning of sudden ice slippage when rain falls on cold roads. It will taper off from the south as we get warmer weather. Snow warnings in central parts of the country will change to rain as milder air moves in.
Only tomorrow are the last of the warnings expected to disappear.
– The warnings last at most until Thursday morning. It will sound from the south, but it applies to the northernmost parts of the warning area. Stay updated on current alert status as it may change.
The weather this Christmas
Meanwhile, the Christmas holiday is approaching and there will be a few days of heavy traffic on the roads as people travel to visit loved ones to celebrate. But you should drive carefully, when the weather makes the roads slippery.
– Right now it looks like an area of precipitation will pass over the country during the weekend. Mainly in the southern and central parts of the country, it can cause slippery and messy traffic conditions. It also looks like it will snow a few centimeters in the north. But we have an unstable weather situation where a lot happens. It is not impossible that it can change.
But whether there will be any Christmas snow this year is still uncertain.
– In the north it will be cold and it looks like it will fill up with snow. It is more uncertain in the rest of the country, but the continued fluctuating weather means that hope is not lost for a white Christmas in the south, says meteorologist Linda Eriksson.
