Tuesday evening, on France 2, François Bayrou announced that donations for the victims of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte would be 75% tax-exempt, from December 17, 2024 to May 17, 2025, up to 1,000 euros. The donations concerned are those for the benefit of associations and foundations recognized as being of public utility.
08:05 – “Of course”, the State will declare a state of natural disaster in Mayotte
Present at a special evening in solidarity in Mayotte after the passage of Cyclone Chido, François Bayrou announced that he will go to the island as soon as his “government is formed”. The Prime Minister also announced that “of course”, the State was going to declare a state of natural disaster in Mayotte. “I have never seen a disaster of this magnitude on national soil. I think of the children who saw their houses blown up, whose schools were destroyed and whose parents are madly anguished,” he conceded on x.
08:00 – Arrival of humanitarian aid this Wednesday
After a first night under curfew for Mayotte, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. to try to ensure the safety of residents on the island and avoid looting, food will arrive from this Wednesday. In total, 120 tonnes of food are expected: 100 in Grande-Terre, and 20 in the two communes of Petite-Terre. Dams will also be “functional” to allow emergency personnel to access delicate areas, to transport food between the two islands and quite simply to allow the movement of residents.

END OF LIVE – In Mayotte, a third of the population lives in precarious housing, or 100,000 people. While the island welcomes many immigrants who live in densely populated slums particularly affected by Cyclone Chido, the authorities expect to find many victims. The town hall of Mamoudzou, the capital, therefore launched a call for volunteers in order to strengthen the workforce on the ground. The police did the same.

Still speaking to France 2 on Tuesday evening, the Prime Minister gave more details regarding his visit to the island after the passage of Cyclone Chido. Remaining vague until now, he declared that “as soon as the President of the Republic leaves [Mayotte]that the government will be formed, [il ira] obviously to mobilize all of the State’s resources.”

The Prime Minister spoke on Tuesday evening during the special evening for Mayotte organized by France Télévisions. On France 2, François Bayrou made several announcements, including the establishment of a call for projects aimed at architects and large companies so that “immediately assembleable models” could be proposed to rebuild Mayotte. Mentioning the possibility of exceptionally tax exemptions for donations to Mayotte and the Fondation de France up to 70%, the tenant of Matignon indicated that the state of natural disaster will be declared.

Humanitarian aid arrives in Mayotte. No less than 100 tonnes of food should be distributed on Wednesday on the main island of the archipelago and around twenty in two towns located on Petite-Terre, the authorities said.

As announced by the island’s prefect, a curfew was put in place in Mayotte this Tuesday evening, at 10 p.m. local time, or 8 p.m. in Paris. Objective of the authorities: to avoid looting and secure public places. The curfew is in place until 4 a.m. It will continue for the next few nights until further notice.
