In December 2022, the editors made a request to the Public Prosecution Service to make the DNA of the Heul girl available for this purpose. That request was forwarded to the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), which rejected it. Disclosure of the DNA would “damage the proper functioning of the State or other authorities”, the NFI believes. RTV Utrecht subsequently invoked the Open Government Act (WOO) and once again requested the DNA. That request was also rejected. RTV Utrecht then started a formal procedure. A lawsuit will be filed in early February on the question of whether the Public Prosecution Service and the NFI should make the DNA material available.
