Why is Christmas celebrated on the thirteenth day?

The reason why Epiphany is named as it is is because it falls 13 days after Christmas Day.

Christmas has been celebrated since the 2nd century, and initially it was a day to mark the birth of Jesus. In the past, Epiphany was celebrated much more than it is today, according to Howl.

In many Christian countries, Epiphany is considered the last day of Christmas. But in the Nordic countries, twenty-day knot, which falls on January 13, is instead considered the end of the holiday. Then many people celebrate by looting the Christmas tree and taking down the Christmas decorations.

Yes, Christmas is a public holiday, or a red day, in Sweden.

Epiphany, the day before Christmas, is not a red day, however.

All red days around Christmas are:

  • Christmas Day: December 25
  • Boxing Day: December 26
  • New Year’s Day: January 1
  • Thirteenth day of Christmas: January 6

Since the Epiphany is a red day, it means you are off when it occurs. If it occurs on a weekday, that is.

In 2025, as I said, the thirteenth day of Christmas falls on a Monday, which means that we get a slightly longer weekend after the first week of the year.
