Strong earthquake in Vanuatu tsunami warning for the area

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, tsunami waves had been detected in the area.

An earthquake has occurred on the island nation of Vanuatu, located in Oceania.

The earthquake occurred on Tuesday near the coast at a depth of about 43 kilometers, 30 kilometers west of the country’s capital, Port-Vila. According to the USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.3.

A tsunami warning was issued for the area after the earthquake. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, tsunami waves had been detected in the area, which it predicted would reach up to a meter in some places on the coast of Vanuatu. In the nearby island states, the waves caused by the earthquake are estimated to be less than 30 centimeters.

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, Vanuatu consists of more than 80 islands inhabited by approximately 330,000 people.
