Swimming influencer Rolf Mikkola has died at the age of 77 | Sports in a nutshell

Rolf Mikkola worked in a variety of positions at Uimaliito.

A long-time swimming influencer Rolf Mikkola died on Saturday at the age of 77. Mikkola reached the Finnish championships as a national team water polo player. He started in Uimaliito as executive director in 1985 and retired as the association’s finance and marketing manager in 2009.

Mikkola also served as general secretary of the Helsinki 2006 short track European championships.

During his retirement years, Mikkola delved into the history of swimming, among other things. He wrote a book about the history of water polo published in 2022 and a book about skill swimming published this fall. He was also working on a book about diving, and he was actively planning the 120th anniversary celebrations of the Swimming Association for the year 2026.
