In the heart of this European capital lies a Christmas market little known to the French, but which is nevertheless worth the detour!

When we think of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, we immediately think of Strasbourg and its unique atmosphere, Berlin, Vienna and Prague. However, the old continent is full of more confidential nuggets which have nothing to envy of their more renowned counterparts.

Every year, this Christmas market attracts thousands of British visitors, seduced by its warm atmosphere and its numerous activities. But then, why are the French still ignoring this little gem? No doubt out of ignorance, because it definitely has everything to please this holiday season.

Imagine strolling the cobbled lanes of the Old Town, surrounded by historic buildings and a majestic hilltop castle, while the tantalizing smell of hot whiskey wafts through the crisp winter air. Welcome to Edinburgh! Here, the Christmas market brilliantly mixes ancestral traditions and modern festivities. The wooden chalets are overflowing with local crafts, colorful tartans and of course, delicious Scottish puddings. It’s also an opportunity to try Celtic dancing to warm up…

Among the star attractions this year, don’t miss the “Castle of Light” night show which illuminates the castle with a thousand lights. Among the unmissable activities, the Christmas Tree Maze in St Andrew Square invites you to get lost in a maze of 450 luminous trees, for a magical stroll with your partner or family. Children will be amazed by the Ferris wheel and its breathtaking panorama of the city. As for the more daring, they will take off aboard the Skyflyer for a breathtaking view of the rooftops of Edinburgh.

As for entertainment, the torchlight parade on December 29 is a must, with its procession of lights in the cobbled streets of the old town. “Hogmanay” brings together no less than 20,000 torch bearers and launches the New Year celebrations. Street shows, fire eaters and pipe bands punctuate the evening. Gourmands will delight in the famous caramel cookies and “mince pies”, these small tarts filled with dried fruits and spices so typical of British Christmases.
