The US has had direct contact with Syrian HTS
The US has had direct contact with Hayat Tahrir al-Shams (HTS), which has taken power in Syria, says US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This despite the fact that the Islamist group is classified as a terrorist by the United States.
Blinken said during a press briefing in Jordan on Saturday that the contact was partly related to the search for Austin Tice, an American journalist who was kidnapped in 2012 at the start of the Syrian civil war.
The foreign minister did not want to go into details, but says that the conversation also touched on, among other things, how the Islamist group intends to rule Syria during a transitional period.
– Our message to the Syrian people is this: We want them (HTS) to succeed and we are prepared to help them do it, he added.
Blinken is the first US official to publicly confirm contacts between the US government and the Islamist group.
