The fantasy series Game of Thrones has been completed for five years. But the series finale (or the entire second half of the series) left a lot to be desired. The consolation for many fantasy fans lay in the fact that the showrunners had at some point overtaken the book and they were still relying on one probably better version could be happy.
It has now been 13 years (!) since George RR Martin published a novel in his Game of Thrones series A Song of Ice and Fire. And the hope for the sequel, the penultimate part, which was promised ages ago The Winds of Winteris dwindling more and more. Especially after the author’s recent comments.
Game of Thrones author George RR Martin admits: He may never be finished with the fantasy saga
While there have been repeated updates on the status of the follow-up novel The Winds of Winter over the last 13 years, some have long been wondering: If Martin didn’t cope with the quarantine period during the peak of the pandemic, he will write the sixth novel – let alone the seventh and last part A Dream of Spring – ever finish? GRRM spoke to the Hollywood Reporter this month about his own concerns and how insensitively some approach the issue:
Unfortunately, I’m 13 years too late. Every time I say that I think, ‘How can I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens one day after the other. But it’s still a priority. Many people are already writing obituaries for me. [Sie sagen]: ‘Oh, he’ll never finish’. Maybe they’re right. I don’t know it. At the moment I’m alive! I feel quite vital.
However, one thing is out of the question for the 78-year-old fantasy master: withdrawing into a comfortable retirement. He be “not a golfer”said Martin.
Incidentally, it has long been a tradition to be amazed at the glacial leisureliness of George RR Martin’s writing. Twelve years ago, just a year after the publication of his last Game of Thrones novel to date, the comedy bards Paul & Storm released a song called Write LIke the Wind, which encourages the author to follow A Dance with Dragons please hurry up.
Other projects repeatedly distract George RR Martin from his fantasy world
Game of Thrones mastermind Martin is a multi-interested and busy man. In recent years he has repeatedly co-produced or at least initiated adaptations of his works – including the prequel series House of the Dragon. He also likes to be a guest at trade fairs, conventions and on talk shows to talk about his many projects and has his own cinema.
Some people resent his reasons for not continuing to write. But even the most cynical fantasy fan might be moved by his latest distraction, dealing with 2024. As he revealed in the same THR interview, he produced a series of five short films out of his own pocket. With these, Martin has the works of his lesser-known colleague and friend Howard Waldrop, who died in January of this year, filmed.
The first of these adaptations is The Ugly Chickens, which is currently making the rounds at festivals and may even be an Oscar contender in the short film category. “He was a great writer. There was no one like Howard”Martin raves about his late friend, to whom he was able to show a rough cut of the film shortly before his death.
