The German film world says goodbye to director and producer Wolfgang Becker. Both RBB and Hollywood Reporter report today that he died at the age of 70 after a serious illness.
Becker was world-famous for his German tragicomedy Good Bye, Lenin! with Daniel Brühl as a loving son who wants to keep the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the GDR from his mother Christiane (Katrin Sass), who has woken up from a coma, in order to protect her weak heart.

After graduating from the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin, Becker’s graduation film Butterflies caused a stir and won several awards. He then founded the production company together with Tom Tykwer, Dani Levy and Stefan Arndt X-Moviesunder whose banner Becker, among other things, Life is a Construction Site and his internationally awarded ex-GDR film Good Bye, Lenin! turned.
In the joint statement on the death of their long-time companion, the X colleagues said poignantly:“Good bye, Wolfgang! You unique friend and companion. We will miss your love, strength and creativity forever.”

Beckers Commitment to German film but it didn’t end with turning. In 2003 he was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy, which awards the film prize named after the most famous X-film protagonist: Lola Run, named after Lola Run.
Other projects for which Wolfgang Becker is known include Tatort with the episode title Blood Sausage Waltz, the television film Children’s Games and the novel adaptation Ich und Kaminski.
