Jonna Sundling’s sudden announcement affects the overall World Cup

Jonna Sundling has opened the skiing season extremely strongly and is second in the overall World Cup.
But despite that, the 29-year-old chooses to skip the Tour de Ski, which starts in a few weeks.
– My main goal is the WC, and that’s what I strive to be in good shape for, she tells TT.

A strong second place in the 20km classic in the season opener in Ruka, Finland, was followed up with a sprint win in Lillehammer.

Sundling’s successful start

Jonna Sundling has opened the season in a brilliant way, and after the two opening weekends is second in the overall World Cup, only behind the American Jessie Diggins.

But the successful start does not come by itself.
– I haven’t come across any obstacles so far. That is probably the biggest reason. Then I think I devote more of my life to skiing now than ever before, says Sundling.

Jonna’s sudden words

But despite its advanced placement after the start of the season, the World Cup is secondary. The big goal is, unsurprisingly, to be the best at the WC.
– The main goal is the WC in Trondheim. So we have made a plan based on that. A plan that will suit me based on the person and the skier I am at the moment. And that involves the World Cup until Christmas, a little break, the World Cup again and then the World Cup.

It sounds to you like you’re not planning on doing the Tour de Ski then, is it?
– Then you understood me correctly. My main goal is the WC, and that’s what I aim to be in good shape for.

Jonna Sundling’s concerns

Next, a somewhat odd competition weekend awaits in Davos, where the majority of Swedish profiles are missing due to illness or injury.

Something that affects Sundling even if she managed to get away herself.
– It’s the kind of thing you worry about if you’re an endurance athlete and skier, sort of constantly. At the same time, it will be a little extra now that so many people have fallen ill recently. I’m not going to stick under the chair with that.

Sundling starts the competition weekend on Friday, where she forms a team with Emma Ribom in the sprint relay.
