Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Episode III – Revenge of the Sith starred Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala. Fans have been curious for years whether a return was possible – and she gave a direct answer.
Fans want to see Natalie Portman back in a galaxy far, far away
In a 2023 video with GQ, there was an exchange between actress Natalie Portman (Léon – The Professional, Black Swan) and fans of Star Wars.
Padmé, her character in the prequel trilogy, has a romantic relationship with Anakin Skywalker and dies giving birth to their children Luke and Leia. This has serious consequences for Anakin Skywalker’s future career.
When fans asked Portman during the video why she never returned to the Star Wars universe, she gave a surprisingly simple answer: she was never asked.
Her exact words were:
I don’t have any information about this. I was never asked whether I can come back. But I’m open to it.
The actress doesn’t seem to be averse to the idea of resurrecting Padmé on the screen again.

Return of former characters in Star Wars seems possible
There is also reason for hope that Portman’s film partner Hayden Christensen aka Anakin Skywalker (aka Darth Vader) was allowed to return to the Star Wars world in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series in 2022.
So Lucasfilm basically doesn’t seem to have a problem with letting previous characters reappear. Maybe this will mean a return for Padmé Amidala at some point.
Outside of the Star Wars franchise, Natalie Portman continues to appear on screen frequently: in 2022 she appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder, in 2023 she appeared in the drama May December and in 2024 the miniseries Lady in the was released Lake, in which she plays the lead role.
