Report Gaza is the worlds most dangerous place for journalists

Israel has captured by far the most journalists and killed them on purpose because of their work, says a report by Reporters Without Borders.

During this year, Gaza has become the world’s most dangerous place for journalists, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). in his recent report.

The organization’s report contains information on imprisoned, kidnapped, missing and killed journalists until November 2024.

Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed more than 155 journalists in Gaza and Lebanon. At least 40 journalists have been deliberately killed for their journalistic work.

Israel currently holds 41 journalists in prison, making it the third largest jailer of journalists in the world. Ahead of Israel on the list are China and Myanmar, fourth is Belarus and fifth is Russia.

Worldwide, one hundred journalists are currently missing.

Almost half of the journalists imprisoned in Russia are Ukrainian

Of the 38 journalists imprisoned in Russia, almost half, 18, are Ukrainians.

Ukrainian reporter Viktoria Roshchina27, disappeared in August 2023 while traveling in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. Kremlin officials confirmed his arrest eight months after his disappearance. His relatives were not informed of his death until October 2024.

Roshchina is one of 180 Ukrainian civilians who have perished in Russian remand prisons, penal camps and detention centers during the war of aggression.

According to the Russian human rights organization, Roštšina spent the last five months of her life in the notorious Taganrok remand prison.

The situation in Syria affects the safety of journalists

70 percent of the recorded kidnappings of journalists this year have taken place in Syria.

The fall of the Syrian dictatorial government creates hope for the better for many, but the course of development is still difficult to predict, the report states.

Most of the hostages were taken by Islamist rebels during the war. Only a small number of imprisoned journalists have now been released.
