Cinema subscription to Sweden – hope to attract narrower films

The investment is made with the support of Europa cinemas and the Swedish Institute and will be introduced in 2025 in around 20 cinemas in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Skåne.

With that, Sweden follows the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Germany, where Cineville already exists and is popular.

Expected to cost SEK 300

The idea is that the model should generally help Sweden’s lagging figures when it comes to cinema visits, and in particular attract audiences to narrower films. The monthly cost looks to be around SEK 300 and that includes an unlimited number of cinema visits.

– In other countries, it has been seen that it has become big among young people, they are used to subscription services. It will be interesting to see if it can be the same in Sweden, says Katrina Mathsson, former operations manager at Folkets Bio, to DN.
