An apartment building collapsed in the center of Cairo – eight people died | News in brief

A repair order had already been issued for the house built in the 1960s in 1993, but the repair was not carried out due to the residents’ opposition.

Eight people died and three were injured after a six-story residential building collapsed in downtown Cairo, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Health.

A repair order had been issued for the building in 1993, but the residents opposed the renovation and it was never done, says an Egyptian official.

The cause of the house collapse is being investigated and other houses in the vicinity of the collapsed building were evacuated as a precaution.

Many of the houses located in the center of Cairo were built in the 19th and 20th centuries and have since been renovated.

More than 26 million people live in the Cairo metropolitan area. In recent years, there have been several collapses of residential buildings, often due to poor condition or because construction regulations have not been followed.
