2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home marked the end of the Marvel era for director Jon Watts, who had directed all of the Spidey films with Tom Holland up to that point. But the British actor is Still far from finished with the red and blue skin and will be in front of the camera for Spider-Man 4 next year.
The spider sequel has not yet been given an official title by Sony Pictures, but we now know roughly what it will be about.
Spider-Man 4: First story information for the Marvel sequel with Tom Holland revealed
We remember: In No Way Home, Spider-Man (Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) tried to magically erase the collective memory of the spider hero’s true identity. However, this had devastating consequences for the Marvel Multiverse, ending with no one remembering Peter Parker. And what happens next?
Producer Amy Pascal recently spoke to Deadline about the main conflict of the upcoming sequel Spider-Man 4. She revealed:
We have to face the fact that [die Hauptfigur] had decided to give up Peter Parker for himself to focus on life as Spider-Man. Because being Peter Parker was too hard. That’s what the film will be about.
What this Spider identity crisis might look like can be seen by reading the Marvel story 24/7 from Amazing Spider-Man issues 592 to 594. According to Pascal (and ComicBook), these contain several parallels to the current Spider-Man film series.
Doctor Strange’s brainwashing spell also caused a lot of trouble in the comic storyline, even turning friends into enemies. When Spidey-hater J. Jonah Jameson becomes mayor of New York, the hunt for the friendly neighborhood spider really begins.
Amazing: More Spider-Man projects in the near future
Because Spider-Man one of the most popular superheroes at all, Marvel (and Sony) are taking a multi-pronged approach with it. So you can look forward to several new projects with the quick-witted super spider in the coming years:
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is currently expected to direct the next live-action Spider-Man film with Tom Holland.
