Blue Protocol was a failure, but the company behind LoL is making an MMO spinoff with a new name

In January 2025, Blue Protocol, Bandai Namco’s anime MMORPG, will go offline in Japan. However, the game’s universe will live on in a spinoff.

What kind of spinoff is this? Since August 2024, it has been clear that Bandai Namco’s ambitious anime MMORPG will never appear in the West. In January 2025, Blue Protocol’s servers are scheduled to go offline in Japan.

But did you know that parallel to the PC version, a PC/mobile offshoot called Blue Protocol Mobile was also in development? It was supposed to be created in collaboration with the Chinese company Tencent and recently went through a closed beta test in the domestic market (via massivelyop.com).

Blue Protocol looks like a playable anime in the trailers:

New name, new luck?

What else is known? New registrations for upcoming tests will now take place in December. However, those responsible have now changed the title of the game (via bpm.bkrgame.com). Star Resonance, the new name, will continue to play in the world of Regna by Blue Protocol and will be an MMO spinoff for PC and mobile devices (with crossplay).

A few days ago a trailer for Star Resonance went live on the YouTube channel Chan, which could also belong to Blue Protocol in terms of anime style. However, there should be significant differences to the PC MMORPG in terms of gameplay and story.

Also clear: Tencent, one of the largest corporations in the world, is behind the project. The company owns League of Legends, dominates the mobile market in China, has a super app called WeChat and has a stake in many western gaming companies such as Epic Games, Funcom and Larian.

It is currently unclear whether Star Resonance will only appear in China or whether a global launch will follow at a later date. In both cases, Tencent’s mobile spinoff may not have been what many fans had hoped for: Fans mourn the new MMORPG Blue Protocol, but have hope
