(Finance) – The evolution of the situation in Syria, its initial implications and the related measures to be adopted, were at the center of a summit at Palazzo Chigi chaired by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, at the end of the Council of Ministers. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, the undersecretary Alfredo Mantovanodelegated authority for the security services, and the heads of the secret services.
“At a time when fighting is still continuing in some regions of Syria – Palazzo Chigi said in a note – the meeting reiterated theabsolute priority given to the safety of civilians and to need to ensure a peaceful and inclusive transition. Particular attention was paid to the safety of Italian citizens, the protection of Christians and all minorities. During the summit the Government established, similarly to what was done by other European partners, to suspend proceedings regarding asylum requests from Syria. In deciding to maintain the diplomatic presence in Damascus, the Executive expresses profound gratitude to all the staff of our diplomatic headquarters. The Government – concludes the note – will continue to follow developments closely, in close contact with the main regional, European and G7 partners”.
