The end of the year is approaching, which can only mean one thing: The Oscar season is in full swing. Months before the most important film award in Hollywood is presented, the films and stars are positioned to get as much attention, nominations and Academy Awards as possible. The Golden Globe Awards, among others, serve as a yardstick for the favorites. The nominations for the 82nd edition were announced today.
The award’s favorites include the fantasy musical Wicked and the Vatican thriller Conclave, in which the German-Austrian director Edward Berger adapts a novel by Robert Harris (you can read why Conclave is worth it here).
Dune 2 with only a few nominations at Golden Globes
The gangster musical Emilia Pérez leads the field with ten nominations. The film about a Mexican drug lord who wants to turn away from crime and live as a woman collected nominations for, among others, leading actress Karla Sofía Gascón and her colleagues Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana.
The returns from the science fiction blockbuster Dune: Part Two, which was nominated twice, are comparatively poor. Things are looking much better for Conclave. The thriller starring Ralph Fiennes is considered one of the favorites of this year’s Oscar season and is in the running with six nominations. This includes one for director Edward Berger, whose Netflix war film Nothing New in the West was already represented at the Golden Globes in 2023.
