Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria was officially overthrown yesterday when the opposition entered Damascus. While the 61-year-old Baath regime collapsed at the end of the 12-day operation, deposed leader Assad and his family took refuge in Russia. After the opposition captured the capital Damascus; Sednaya Prison, identified with the regime and known for its torture, was raided and the prisoners were released.
While the release of opposition political prisoners, who had been held under severe torture and poor conditions for decades, was one of the clearest images of the overthrow of the regime, the ‘cellar’ detail that emerged became a hot topic all over the world.
THERE ARE PRISONERS IN THE UNDERGROUND CELLARS
Prisoners who were seen on security cameras in the prison and who are still unreachable were captured.
On the other hand, the organization, also known as the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets), reported that searches have been carried out in Sednaya Prison for hours and that there is concern that some detainees are still being held in the underground cellars known as the Red Wing.
NOT REACHED YET
In a statement on Telegram, the White Helmets stated that the teams “opened several areas inside the prison” but “have not found anything yet” and said that they will continue to provide updates as the team continues their search efforts.
