A developer explains how he imagines the future. He explains how in the future all tasks could only be carried out by a single graphics card. And it is already the case that graphics cards are equipped with many functions that are reminiscent of a real computer.
Which developer is it about? John Carmack is a legendary game developer and is best known as the leading programmer of cult titles such as Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D.
Carmack has now stated that he can imagine a future in gaming completely without computers. Then all you need for gaming is a graphics card. And he points out that gaming and upgrading would have been much easier in the past. The English-language magazine TomsHardware.com reports on this.
The manufacturer Intel has now introduced a completely new graphics card:
The graphics card could take over all tasks in the future
What does the developer say? Carmack posted an extensive post on X.com about how he could imagine gaming in the future. He explained that he could imagine that in the near future the graphics card would do all the work and act as a PC itself:
In his example, you connect your graphics card. A compact operating system, such as a Linux distribution, could already be installed on the graphics card itself in order to also control pre-installed applications. On top of that, you could connect the graphics card to a keyboard via the DisplayPort connection. He himself says specifically:
It would just be fun if GPUs generated their own video signal with diagnostic information when you connected power outside of a host system. You could go further and install a tiny Linux system with BusyBox on the command processor and backchannel keyboard input through the display port if you don’t have a USB port [an der Grafikkarte] has.
How absurd is that? Some components of your PC already work without a processor. And graphics cards are regularly sold with additional features or are experimented with:
The developer himself explains that graphics cards used to be much more accessible. He points out that in the past you could connect graphics cards directly to each other. All you needed was a ribbon cable and the performance of the graphics card doubled. And it didn’t require any special software or specific hardware.
If you want to get more out of your gaming PC, consider buying a new graphics card. But does it really matter whether I end up choosing AMD or Nvidia? MeinMMO introduces you to the similarities and differences between AMD and Nvidia and explains what you should consider before buying your next graphics card: When it comes to a graphics card, how important is whether I buy AMD or Nvidia?
