Neither 60°C nor 90°C is systematically necessary to eliminate bacteria and microbes from your sheets. Other parameters come into account.
The cleanliness of our sheets is essential to guarantee optimal hygiene in the bedroom, but it does not rely solely on the temperature and frequency of washing. Sheets accumulate sweat residue, dead skin cells, dust mites, and many other invisible contaminants, making them a breeding ground for microbes and bacteria.
The washing machine is one of the most useful appliances in the house, but it still needs to be used correctly to achieve the desired results. The program and temperature chosen, but also the products used make the difference between a good and a bad final result. For example, we often think that high temperatures, such as 60°C or 90°C, are absolutely necessary to kill dust mites, microbes and bacteria, but this is not always necessary.
Although popular belief is that washing bedding at high temperatures is the best remedy for thoroughly cleaning sheets, many experts believe that washing them at 40 degrees, with a good detergent, is sufficient to achieve excellent results. This eliminates up to 99% of bacteria and mites. Modern detergents contain disinfecting agents and enzymes that become active even at low temperatures, making 40 degree cycles as effective as washing at high temperatures, and with less risk of deterioration.
Using this temperature has an advantage. In addition to disinfecting with great efficiency, the fabrics are at the same time protected so that they are not damaged during washing, thus helping them to stay in better condition for longer. Likewise, setting washing machines to 40°C helps save energy.
Be careful though to choose a long enough washing cycle. The combination of time and the mechanical movement of the washing machine is as important as the temperature itself, since a long wash cycle will allow water, detergent and the action of the washing machine to achieve optimal effect to remove all dirt from clothes.
Although 40°C is sufficient for regular maintenance, some cases warrant hotter wash cycles, at 60°C. For example :
- If you are sick. In the event of a virus or contagious bacteria, washing at 60°C helps destroy germs more effectively.
- For dust mite allergies, washing at 60°C once a month is recommended, as it better eliminates allergens.
However, these high temperature washes do not need to be frequent. Regular maintenance at 40°C is enough to keep your sheets clean and fresh.
