Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a statement after the meeting on Syria held in the “Astana” format, in which he attended with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi. Lavrov said that at their meeting in Doha, they agreed that “hostilities” in Syria should be ended immediately. Stating that Moscow wants to see dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition, Lavrov said, “It is unacceptable to allow the opposition to take control of Syrian lands.”

Asked how the situation in Syria will develop and what will happen to Russian military bases there, Lavrov said that he would not make a prediction and that “extremism” will increase in the Middle East unless a Palestinian state is established.

Lavrov said that, together with their Iranian and Turkish counterparts, they called for “an end to hostile activities” in Syria. Noting that Russia, Iran and Turkey support “dialogue between the government and the opposition” in Syria, Lavrov said, “We called for an immediate end to hostile activities. We all stated that we want the full implementation of United Nations (UN) resolution 2254 and for this purpose we called for dialogue between the government and the legitimate opposition. “Today, we agreed to make a strong call with Iran and Türkiye, and we will take some special steps to ensure that this call is heeded,” he said.
