Prince Carl Philip name – what is his last name?
The prince’s full name is Carl Philip Edmund Bertil. The name comes from his descendant Charles III Philip of the Palatinate. The slightly special name Edmund is from the prince’s grandfather prince Gustav Adolf, who was called Edmund by the family. And finally, the name Bertil is from the prince’s one sponsor, Prince Bertil.
But what about the last name? Is his name Bernadotte? Or Sommerlath as his mother’s relatives? No, actually none of that. This is because the Swedish royals do not have surnames. They are from the Bernadotte family, but where we other ordinary people have surnames in the Swedish Tax Agency’s register, the members of the royal family only have an asterisk.
– The royal family has no surnames, due to constitutional practice. They are from the Bernadotte family – but their name is not Bernadotte. They only have their first names and their titles, says Svensk Damtidning’s court reporter Helena Wiklund told Svensk Dam.
However, both Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine have made exceptions, for example in school contexts. Then they used Bernadotte as a “surname”, writes Swedish Lady.
