In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the author also spoke about The Winds of Winter and admits that he is probably 13 years too late. He wonders how this could even happen. But he continues that he is still quite vital:
But that is still a priority. Many people are already writing obituaries for me. [Sie sagen] ‘Oh, he’ll never finish.’ Maybe they’re right. But I don’t know. I live in the moment! I seem to be quite energetic!

He probably also said that he would never retire because he wasn’t a golfer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he is currently focused on adapting the short stories of his old friend Howard Waldrop. Both authors were friends for over 60 years until Waldrop died in early 2024.
