Turkeys decision for Qahtani one of the leaders of HTS

Opposition groups against the Assad regime in Syria continue to capture critical cities one by one. HTS is the leading opposition group. The group, which was once Al-Nusra, changed its name and became HTS. The group was declared a terrorist organization by Türkiye in 2018.

HE TOOK A PIONEERING ROLE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE TERRORIST ORGANIZATION

One of the leaders of HTS was Iraqi Abu Mariya Qahtani. According to what is reported in Sözcü, Qahtani played important roles in the process of Al-Nusra announcing its separation from Al-Qaeda in 2016 and taking the name “Conquest of Damascus Front”. He also took part in the organization’s merger with a number of other groups in 2017 to establish “Heyet-i Tahrir’ush Sham” (HTS/Sham’s Liberation Committee).

HE WAS KILLED THIS YEAR

According to HTS’s statement, Qahtani was killed at the age of 47 in an attack from the town of Sarmada in Idlib, Syria, on April 4, 2024. Today, while HTS, formerly led by Qahtani, continues its advance against the Assad regime in Syria, a remarkable decision came from Turkey.
