It is an image that Tunisians had not seen for months: Kais Saïed speaking to Noureddine Taboubi, the general secretary of the UGTT. This union center is known in Tunisia for its weight in the political game.
Today, the UGTT is one of the only intermediary bodies still standing since the coup by President Kais Saïed on July 25, 2021 and the dismantling of several democratic institutions that followed.
More discreet for more than a year, because it says it is refocusing on its union bases and a major internal transformation, the center returned to the forefront this week, after the vote on the new finance law. Noureddine Taboubi was concerned about legislation especially “ tax » which will have “ social consequences ”, in his words.
The president assures that he wants to respond “ to the aspirations of Tunisians »
Faced with him, this Thursday, Kais Saïed assured that he wanted to review the Labor Code to respond “ to the aspirations of Tunisians », while declaring that they wanted to work together to implement a legislative revolution and break with tinkering solutions.
The country’s president also called for national unity. Words listened attentively by the trade union leader, not very talkative, in the video extract published on the presidency’s Facebook page.
