In addition to the 22 dead, 24 people have been taken to hospital after drinking the alcohol.

The alcohol is said to have been illegally manufactured and sold to consumers around Istanbul in Turkey. It is currently unclear exactly what in the alcohol caused people to die and fall ill.

19 people have been arrested and ten remanded in custody, write Post.

Shortly after the poisonings in Laos

At least six young tourists died after suspected methanol poisoning in Laos last month. Eleven people were then also taken to hospital. The Swedish Foreign Ministry then warned in particular about methanol poisoning.

“Be careful about drinking alcohol, especially cocktails and drinks that contain spirits that may have been adulterated with harmful substances,” the State Department wrote about Laos at the time.

In December 2021, at least 22 people died and 16 were treated in hospitals in Istanbul after a similar incident. Then it was about methanol poisoning, writes CBS.
