This is what you need to know for The Dead

The ARD hit The Dead of Marnow was intended as a ten-part miniseries. When the thriller was broadcast on television in March 2021, it attracted an average of over 5 million people in front of the screen every week and was highly praised, but that changed.

Season 2 will air on Erste in December 2024. We have already seen them and tell you what you need to know in advance for season 2 without spoilers.

As a refresher: This is how The Dead of Marnow Season 1 ended

The first season of the densely told thriller series impressed with a portrait that was unusual for German productions Midsummer in the Mecklenburg Lake District.

There, the two investigators Lona Mendt (Petra Schmidt-Schaller) and Frank Elling (Sascha Alexander Geršak) uncover murders and other evil machinations pharmaceutical company in the GDR on and who helped cover it up. This extended to today’s influential politicians. Mendt and Elling were in mortal danger due to their revelations, but were ultimately able to solve the case together. Her colleague Sören Jasper (Anton Rubtsov), however, was murdered.

The most important characters from season 1 in season 2

Lona Mendt and Frank Elling are again the main characters in season 2 – even if the ensemble is expanding somewhat. They still investigate together and are more family than colleagues.

Elling’s wife is gone, but his are playing Daughter Mareike (Bianca Nawrath) and his dementia Mother Helga (Christine Schorn) plays an even bigger role. Helga even moves into his house at the beginning of season 2. He has the space now.

In addition to these previous main and supporting characters, there are a few important new additions in season 2. The Dead of Marnow 2 is told on two time levels in which different inspectors investigate.

Key reveals to remember for Season 2

What isn’t said in season 2, but always resonates, is the horror list of all the things that happened to Lona Mendt. Some time before season 1 she did lost her husband and child in a plane crash. Since then she has lived in her trailer so that she can always be wherever she wants. She still has the trailer in season 2 and she keeps a single small box with memories of her family in it.

Frank Elling, on the other hand, accepted bribes in season 1 to better finance the expansion of his house. Lona Mendt condemned him for this, but covered him up, which greatly deepened the loyalty between the two. The house is now finished, but his Wife left him. His daughter is also about to move out, but still lives with him.

That’s what Dark Heart – The Dead of Marnow Season 2 is about

If you want to stay on top of the content of the second season of The Dead of Marnow, you have to be careful. The episodes tell the story two different time levels.

Season 2 begins with Lona Mendt and Frank Elling, who are in hiding with a girl who is supposed to testify against an influential person. However, this goes terribly wrong and the two inspectors fall into a coma after an exchange of fire. It is unclear whether they will survive.

Two new commissioners are then brought in, Special investigators Hagen Dudek and Maja Kaminski. The two are played by Bernhard Conrad and Sabrina Amali. They are supposed to find out what Mendt and Elling discovered, what led to the attack on them and where the girl disappeared to.

At the same time, we now find out what Mendt and Elling discovered a few weeks earlier and whether the two new recruits are good enough to win the race against time to uncover a criminal ring.

When is season 2 on TV?

You can already stream the first and second seasons of The Dead of Marnow in the ARD media library. Season 2 is on free TV December 7th with four episodes and on December 12th with two episodes in the first. It’s worth tuning in!
