This is one of his toughest and best roles

Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of those actors who can enrich a film incredibly with their presence alone. The Hollywood career of two-time Oscar winner (Glory, Training Day) now spans over four decades in which he has demonstrated his talent in a wide variety of genres.

A prime example of this is tonight’s TV evening, which is all about Washington. The channels RBB and VOX are broadcasting two of his best films, Flight and The Equalizer, which show different facets of the star.

In Flight, Denzel Washington delivers an acting tour de force

In the 2012 drama Flight, Washington plays the pilot William “Whip” Whitaker, whose heavy drinking becomes his undoing a passenger plane he was flying had to make an emergency landing. Although the experienced captain is able to save the plane from a devastating crash, six people are still killed.

Initially hailed as a hero, but after an investigation into the events of the drunken state whips during the flight to the light. He now faces life imprisonment if he cannot prove his innocence. But should the pilot really deny his addiction in order to be acquitted?

Washington brought for Flight one of his most complex characters to the screen: One moment, Whip Whitaker is an arrogant charismatic who is completely aware of his professional abilities. The next moment we’re dealing with a bunch of misers trying to drown their self-doubt in alcohol.

The fact that we follow this character’s inner odyssey so readily is Washington’s captivating game thanks to the fact that the film by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) easily carries over its 138 minute running time. The acting veteran deservedly received one for this performance Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

With The Equalizer, Denzel Washington founded his own action franchise

Washington presents itself completely differently, but no less convincingly, in the action thriller The Equalizer. The 2014 film marks his second of five collaborations with director Antoine Fuqua to date (The Magnificent Seven).

In it he can be seen as former special agent Robert McCall, who feels like he can overwhelm any opponent in close combat in a matter of seconds. However, when he takes on the Russian mafia to free sex worker Alina (Chloë Grace Moretz) from their clutches, even the hardened McCall reaches his limits.

Washington was so convincing as the action hero in The Equalizer that the film has now been followed by two sequels. The star is also already planning to continue the series with The Equalizer 4 and 5. Anyone who watches the first part will undoubtedly notice how much fun Washington has in his role.
