Kate worked in the vault during the helicopter heist

She describes a workplace that is usually characterized by community and humor, but that night turned into chaos, fear and uncertainty.

– When I heard the sound of the helicopter, I thought at first that it was the guards who were joking, but soon I realized that we were about to be robbed. The roof collapsed, and glass was broken everywhere, she says.

“We knew nothing”

Kate and her colleagues tried to protect themselves by hiding in the vault, but the uncertainty was the worst.

– We didn’t know where the robbers were going. If they were to come to us in the vault or to the other ward. It was a nightmare, she says and continues:

– At the same time, explosions were heard that never seemed to end. For those of us who were there, the 30 minutes felt unbearably long.

Even after the robbers had left, the terror remained. Long interrogations with the police and suspicion within the working group made the situation even more difficult.

– For many weeks and months there was talk that insider information could be behind the robbery. We were all suspects, because there was a risk that one of us had leaked information, she explains.

The Netflix series opens up old wounds

When Netflix launched a dramatization of the robbery, the memories came flooding back to Kate.

– It is presented as if it were so cool. I think people should know that it wasn’t like that at all, she points out.

She herself has not seen the series and has no plans to.

– I understand that it is embellished to be exciting to watch, but it feels like there is far too little focus on the victims of crime. People should know how bad a person can feel after going through something like this.

Living with the traces of the robbery

Although many years have passed, Kate still carries the experience with her. She often thinks about safety and whether something like this could happen again.

– I am much more suspicious of people. I would like to be open and believe the best about everyone, but it is very difficult, she says.

Today, she has found a new path in life as a boat captain, but regaining trust is still a struggle.

– Time should heal all wounds, but this wound seems to be drawn up at regular intervals. We will simply have to see, she concludes.
