The great player of the past years Neale Fraser has died at the age of 91, the Australian Tennis Association said on its website on Tuesday. Fraser celebrated no less than 19 grand slam tournament victories in his career. Three of the first places came in men’s singles and a total of 16 in doubles and mixed doubles.
In singles, Fraser won the Wimbledon championship in 1960 and won the US Open in 1959 and 1960. In 1959 and 1960, he cleaned the prize table at the US Open by celebrating first places in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Fraser, who was number one in the world rankings at his peak, was also known for his success in the national team competition in the Davis Cup, first as a player and later as the captain of the Australian team. He captained Australia in no less than 24 Davis Cups.
– He was a real gem in the golden age of Australian tennis legends – an incredible world number one, grand slam champion and Davis Cup icon, an Australian legend of the same era Rod Laver tweeted about Fraser.
