There are German film titles that burrow into your ear canal like worms. Miss Smilla’s feeling for snow belongs to it. The 1997 thriller based on a template by Peter Høeg is still known to many genre fans today. And they can now be happy: The story is being republished as a series with a fresh approach and Elyas M’Barek and the first pictures are already available. The original is available on Netflix.

As Constantin Film reports in a press release, there is Smilla’s feeling for snow in the thriller new edition first pictures. There you can see, among others, leading actress Fillippa Coster-Waldau (The Girl and the Dogs) as Smilla, M’Barek as Rahid and Henry Lloyd-Hughes (The Incredibles 2) as Tork.

The new series adaptation of Høeg’s novel moves the action to Greenland in the year 2040. Smilla Jaspersen lives in seclusion in a surveillance state and only befriends a little Inuit boy. Than one day dies in a shocking way, She uncovers a dark secret in which the entrepreneur Tork also seems to be involved.

Little is known about showrunner Amma Asante’s (The Handmaid’s Tale) project other than the basic plot and the main cast. M’Barek’s character Rahid does not appear by name in the novel or the first adaptation. But it could be the role of the mechanic played by Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary) in the 1997 thriller.

It is not yet known when exactly Asante’s series will be published. We expect a start over the course of 2025. There is still plenty of time to catch up on the 1997 original on Netflix. In addition to Byrne, it stars Julia Ormond (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Richard Harris (Harry Potter).
