In recent years, second hand has become increasingly popular. On the buying and selling site Tradera, several product groups have seen a marked increase in the number of advertisements and completed deals.

Sofia Hagelin works as communications manager at Tradera. In an earlier interview with News24 she has given an account of what she believes is the basis for the great upsurge in buying second hand.

– I think that many people who already buy clothes second hand are starting to realize that you don’t have to limit yourself to the wardrobe when it comes to second hand shopping. There is a great demand for luxury and designer goods even in, for example, watches, accessories and beauty, and buying second hand is an easy way to find this at a better price and also do something good for the planet.

She bought Picasso works for SEK 65

Do you enjoy going to flea markets to see if you can find that life-changing purchase? That’s actually what a woman in New York experienced a number of years ago.

When Nancy Cavaliere visited the Salvation Army flea market in New York in 2018, she found four plates she couldn’t tear her eyes away from. After buying them for 65 kroner, she later inspected the plates more closely, and to her great surprise saw a familiar name on the back: Pablo Picasso.

After checking the authenticity, Cavaliere then auctioned off the four plates at the venerable auction house Sotheby’s. After the bidding ended, it turned out that the purchase, which cost 65 kroner, would generate a whopping 22,000 dollars, equivalent to 239,000 kroner, after the auction house received its commission.

Not bad.

Finding valuables is not impossible in Sweden either. With a bit of luck, you might find a piece of art that later turns out to be worth a fortune.

In other cases, you may rather like to have nice things in your home and therefore buy used for a lower price.

The ceramicist and the designer Lisa Larson is an artist who has become increasingly popular on Tradera, especially with the background of her death in 2024, says Sofia Hagelin.

– Her ceramics have become even more in demand since her passing in March 2024. From March 12 to August 12, 2024, sales of Lisa Larson on Tradera have increased by 49 percent compared to the same period last year. The average prices are so far about the same as before. Approximately 10 percent of sales go abroad, and mainly to Japan, Denmark, Great Britain, France and Holland.
