The end of the year is getting closer, and after the new year new tax rates on petrol and diesel will apply, reports Carup.
Later in the year, the reduction obligation will be increased in order for Sweden to meet the environmental targets set by the EU, which may affect the prices of fuel for Swedish consumers.

The reduction obligation can result in more expensive fuel
The government sharply reduced the reduction obligation on petrol and diesel on 1 January 2024, motivated by the election promise of cheaper fuel.
However, it has been announced that the reduction obligation will have to be increased again in 2025 in order to meet the EU’s environmental goals.
The decision has not yet been made, but the increased reduction obligation is expected to come into force on 1 July.

As early as the new year, new tax rates start to apply to petrol and diesel.
From 1 January 2025, the tax per liter of petrol is 75 öre including VAT lower than in 2024. The tax per liter of diesel will instead be increased by 11 öre including VAT.
When the higher reduction obligation starts to apply on 1 July, the taxes are adjusted again. The tax per liter of petrol is reduced by a further 40 öre including VAT, and the tax per liter of diesel is reduced by 29 öre including VAT.

So will the prices of petrol and diesel
The fact that the New Year’s tax on petrol is reduced by 75 öre per liter including VAT should mean a corresponding price reduction at the pump.
In the same way, the price of diesel should increase by 11 öre per liter including VAT.
The tax reductions on 1 July, on the other hand, should not make any major difference to the prices at the pump, since the reduction obligation is increased at the same time.
– Actually, it’s very simple. In order to meet the environmental targets, we are increasing the reduction obligation, but at the same time lowering the tax. For the customers, nothing will happen, it will be about the same prices at the pump, explains Nora Johnson at the supermarket chain Oljesheikerna, with whom Carup has spoken.
