Olympic gold, Olympic record and several impressive world records.
That’s not enough to make Armand Duplantis the athlete of the year.
The Swedish-American pole vaulter is recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
2024 has been an absolutely fantastic year for our brilliant pole vault star Armand Duplantis25. He dominated by winning EC, WC and Olympic gold, setting an Olympic record and setting three world records during the season. Of course, it’s a crazy achievement!
Armand Duplantis is not the best in the world
However, the championship gold and the records are not enough for “Mondo” to be able to call himself the athlete of the year. He has been snubbed by the International Association of Athletics Federations, which overlooked his efforts and selected another prize winner in the category.

Instead it was the Botswanan Letsile Tebogo who won on the men’s side. The sprinter won the country’s first Olympic gold ever this summer (200 meters). The year’s track and field athlete on the women’s side was Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands. She won three Olympic medals this summer, including a gold in the marathon.
Duplantis received a small consolation prize
“Mondo”, on the other hand, received an award as the year’s best in the technical branches, which is a subcategory. Best in the running events was again Tebogo. So the Swede was at least somewhat rewarded.
– I congratulate all our winners and all the athletes who were nominated for these awards. I thank them for inspiring us all with their achievements this year, says the association’s chairman president Sebastian Coe.
