Nowadays, shops already decorate their windows with holiday decorations in September. The thought used to be that Christmas decorations before Santa Claus had left the country would bring bad luck. “No idea how long ago that was exactly, but we first celebrated Saint Martin, then Sinterklaas and then Christmas,” recalls Ineke Strouken, an expert when it comes to Dutch traditions. “People with adult children postpone their gifts to Christmas, that is a trend that started about twenty years ago.”
