Game of Thrones is notorious for regularly breaking the hearts of its viewers. In the ranking we remember the 10 saddest deaths in the fantasy series.
How many characters died? Hardly any other series has as many characters die on a regular basis as Game of Thrones. In all 8 seasons of the fantasy series there are only four episodes in which no one dies (via winteriscoming.net). The number of deaths is correspondingly high:
Which of these deaths you find the saddest is of course very subjective. In this list we want to try to find the 10 deaths that probably affected most people emotionally.
Spoiler warning: Massive spoilers for all seasons of Game of Thrones follow.
10th place: Oberyn Martell
Oberyn’s death may not have been the most emotional, but it was one of the most brutal. In “Judgment by Combat” he competes for Tyrion against Gregor Clegane. At first it seems as if he will win. But he delays the fight for too long. Gregor Clegane takes his chance and crushes Oberyn’s head with his bare hands.
Unfortunately, Oberyn wasn’t seen in the series for very long, otherwise his death would have been even sadder. Nevertheless, he was a favorite for many from the very first moment, partly because of his charismatic actor Pedro Pascal.
9th place: Khal Drogo
We had to say goodbye to Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones. Just as he is expecting a child with Daenerys, his life is in danger because of an infected cut. To save the “moon of her life,” Daenerys asks the witch Mirri Maz Dur for help. This actually saves Drogo’s life, but now he is in a kind of coma.
In an emotional scene, Daenerys realizes that she has lost her husband for good. To put him out of his suffering, she then smothers him with a pillow.
8th place: Ygritte
Ygritee and Jon share a tragic story. Because even though the two love each other, they are on opposite sides. When the wildlings attack the Black Fortress of the Night’s Watch, they meet one last time. She aims her bow and arrow at Jon, but can’t bring herself to shoot him. Suddenly she is the one who is pierced from behind by an arrow. In a touching scene, Ygritte dies shortly afterwards in Jon’s arms.
Even though the relationship between the two was constantly up and down, many consider it to be one of the best romances in Game of Thrones. This is exactly what makes Ygritte’s death particularly sad.
