Games for money are increasing among boys and among girls the consumption of snus is now at historically high levels. This is what this year’s CAN survey shows.
CAN, the Central Association for Alcohol and Narcotics Information, has compiled in its annual report the experiences of young people with alcohol, drugs, doping, tobacco and gambling for money.
Both alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking continue to decline among Swedish schoolchildren – the latter sharply. On the other hand, snus is increasing in both year 9 and among second-year high school students.
Above all, it is white snus, also known as tobacco-free snus, that young people use, and the rise is particularly noticeable among girls, where consumption is now at historically high levels. The proportion of snus users has increased from 4 to 26 percent over a ten-year period.
In the 2024 survey, 16 percent of ninth graders state that they smoke snuff, compared to 5 percent in 2017. In year 2 of high school, 29 percent snuff, which can be compared to 13 percent in 2012.
The CAN report also shows that the percentage of young people who gamble for money is increasing, especially among boys, where gambling has increased annually since 2019. At that time, the percentage was 27 percent. This year, it was 43 percent.
CAN’s national school survey has been conducted annually since 1971 in grade 9 and the second year of high school.
