The government issue divides: “V will find it very difficult”

In 2021, the Left Party was involved in bringing down the government with the vote of no confidence against then Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S).

Three years later, both parties are in opposition. But the memory of the vote of no confidence is still imprinted in the Social Democrats.

– It is used as a blanket excuse to say: V cannot be trusted. You will be able to use it as an argument for not including V in a government, says Leonidas Aretakis, editor-in-chief of the independent socialist newspaper Flamman.

The fact is that the Left Party has never been in government. On the other hand, they have acted as supporting wheels for red-green governments and have long had good relations with S.

With the January 2019 agreement, the political blocs changed shape and C abandoned its former alliance colleagues in favor of S. This meant that two parties with widely different ideologies – C and V – were suddenly on the same side in politics.

“Andersson has a favorite party”

C has indicated several times that he is not interested in sitting in a government with V. On the other hand, V also believes that the political differences between the parties are so great that it makes cooperation difficult. However, V wants to see that before the next election, the opposition sits down and discusses how an alternative government could be put forward.

The pressure is now increasing on and within the opposition to agree on how to govern before the 2026 election. Magdalena Andersson (S) has not said outright which party she would prefer in a government. But things look darker for V, believes Leonidas Aretakis.

– Andersson has made it clear that her favorite party to collaborate with is C. S currently agrees with C more than V on the major welfare issues. That’s why I think V will find it very difficult, he says.
