“The convicted person, Toomaj Salehi, who was sentenced to one year in prison for propaganda crimes against the Islamic Republic, was released from prison on December 1, 2024 after serving his sentence,” Iran’s judiciary announced in a statement.
Salehi was arrested in the fall of 2022 in connection with the widespread protests that erupted after a young woman died in the custody of the notorious morality police, where she was taken because she was not considered to have worn her veil properly.
Due to Salehi’s political texts, he was accused, among other things, of “spreading corruption in the world”. State-controlled media singled him out as a key figure in the nationwide protests.
For a period he was released on bail, but he was arrested again after a short time.
Salehi was sentenced to death earlier this spring, a sentence that was overturned in June.
