Taiwan’s president who took office in May Lai Ching-te received a festive reception in Hawaii, USA, where he visited as part of his tour of the Pacific countries.
It is Lai’s first trip abroad in office. Lai’s trip has raised objections in China, which considers Taiwan its province. China opposes any form of Taiwan independence diplomacy.
The US does not recognize Taiwan diplomatically, but for decades it has supported the island’s regime and sold it arms. After Hawaii, Lai will visit the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau.
